Significant Factor in Leading Essay In 1914, the First World War broke out. It is the war which involved most of the countries in the world. The Sarajevo Assassination has triggered off the war as Austria-Hungary use it as a war excuse to declare war on Serbia. To a large extent I think that extreme nationalism is the most significant factor in leading the outbreak of the First World War. â€Å"Nationalism is an infantile disease. It is the measles of mankind†. This was said by Albert Einstein. Nationalism is the desire of people of the same race and culture to govern themselves and to keep their own way of life. In the Early 19th century, It started common belief of people’s right with liberalism. However, nationalism became more extreme and furious since 1871. People commonly believed that their country was usually right and superior to other country. They aimed to promote the national glory of their country by weakening the others. This resulted in many conflicts. Firstly, for the independence movement of the Balkan states, they aimed to get free from foreign rule and thus the Eastern Question emerged. Eastern Question means a series of problems happened in the Balkans. It had a nasty long term effect on international relationship. It was true to say that it caused by the rise of Balkan nationalism. Powers would not give way because Balkan is strategically important and most importantly, for the sake for promoting national glory. Secondly, for the Pan-German Movement, Germany wanted to build a big German empire. She wanted to expand into the Balkans and West Asia. This alarmed the powers like Britain and Russia and increased the tension between the powers. Thirdly, for the Pan-Slav Movement, Russia wanted to unite all Slavs into a big Slav state under Russian leadership. These complicated the Eastern Questions and had conflicts with Austria-Hungary. Fourthly, for the Greater Serbia Movement, Serbia wanted to expand Serbia and united her with Bosnia-Herzegovina and Albania. This worsened the Austro-Serbian relationship and brought two Balkan Wars which increased Austro-Serbian hostilities. In addition, the wars made Austria-Hungary became more determined to crush Serbia. The crisis made Europe toward to the First World War and the Sarajevo Assassination made it speed up even more. As the Archduke Francis Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, was assassinated by Princip, the member of Black Hand. This provided Austria-Hungary had the excuse to attack Serbia. Finally, the war broke out. Fifthly, for the revenge movement led by France, she wanted to take revenge on Germany owing to her lost of Alsace-Lorraine and the humiliation suffered from the Franco-Prussian War. Bismarck started the alliance system to isolate France and avoid a two-front war against Germany. Therefore, the Three Emperor’s League was formed by Germany, Russia and Austria-Hungary. But finally, the Three Emperor’s League broke up. In the First World War, The two rival alliances were Triple Alliance and Triple Entente. They agreed to assist each other if they were attacked by other powers. But this didn’t contribute a lot to the First World War, it only increased the mutual suspicion and distrust between the powers. Besides, powers formed the alliances for self-protection. Therefore, compared with extreme nationalism, it is not a significant factor. Sixthly, for the expansion, Germany, France, Britain and Russia both wanted to get national glory by building a big colonial empire by strengthening their armaments. This resulted in the colonial rivalry. Due to the saturation of the European market, powers competed with one another to acquire direct control over the colonies. When William II became the new Kaiser, Germany adopts an active colonial policy. He aimed to get more colonies to get national glory as colonies were a symbol of national strength. Some believed in the saying that colonial rivalries only worsened international relation and caused tension between powers. It is only partly true, colonial rivalries may also improve the relationship between powers when one was compromised. For example, Britain and France had conflicts in Sudan, but finally France withdrew and won British friendship. It showed that colonial rivalries can worse or improve the international relation. The expansion also resulted in militarism. Powers spend more money on military built-up. They produced powerful weapons like poison gas, tanks etc. Also, they enlarge the army and navy. Powers’ thought that strong military could defend themselves. The strong navies were needed to protect a country’s overseas colonies and their interests. Although armaments race created more suspicion and fear, it is self-defence in nature. Therefore, it is not a significant factor. Seventhly, the economic rivalries between the powers contributed to the protectionism. They increased tariffs on the imported products to protect their home markets and local industries. This increase suspicion and hostility among the powers. But when it compared with extreme nationalism, it is again not a significant factor. Eighthly, social Darwinists believed in the ideas of â€Å" survival for the fittest† and â€Å"natural selection†. These ideas were applied in the international politics. It gave rise to the expansionism. Again, It is not the most significant factor. To sum up, the extreme nationalism is the fundamental factor. The others are the auxiliary factor. There are many forms of nationalism, include the independence movements, unification, the revenge movement and the expansion, each of them gave rise to another factor. Therefore, to a large extent, extreme nationalism is the most significant factor in leading the outbreak of First World War.

Farmland Preservation :: Farming Agriculture Conservation Essays

Farmland Preservation Farmland Preservation is something that every person in New Jersey should be aware of. Our Garden State is quickly becoming too populated to hold such a title anymore. As more and more farms disappear, we are losing the precious land and culture, which initially made so many people decide to make New Jersey home. Everyone seems to want to move to the country and away from the city, but soon New Jersey may no longer have the attractive countryside landscape it was once so well known for. The people of New Jersey need to be made aware of what is happening to the landscape and need to realize what their individual impact is on that landscape. The Farmland Preservation Program was officially established with the Agricultural Retention Act of 1983 and the Right to Farm Act of 1983 (1). The program is administered by the State Agricultural Development Committee (SADC), which consists of eleven members all representing the state and general public’s interests on several levels including, agriculture and the environment (1). The main objective of the program is to try and protect farmland from development, whether it is a short time or long time effect. The program buys the development rights from the farmers so as to try and ease the pressure put on them from developers to sell the land entirely to be broken up and developed. Farmland in general has so many benefits for both the farmer and the general public to consider. It is part of our culture here in New Jersey, in fact 75% of the US public agrees that, â€Å"Protecting the environment is so important that requirements and standards cannot be too high† (4). Now, that is a lot of people who are in agreement but now maybe they need to be made aware what they can do to help and what it takes to agree with that statement and mean it. Farms contribute in a big way to the American Dream and the quality of life people assume when they say they want to â€Å" move out the country†.

Management at HQ controls the replenishments because they can oversee all operations across all of the stores. They have the power to make calculated decision about each store that would benefit the company as a whole. If each store were to replenish the products themselves, they would only replenish what is popular at each time. HQ ensures that each store is receiving the goods that will properly sell in the location that the store is in. HQ can analyze trends on a larger scale, and implement advertising strategies and product mix based on the data trends. This creates an unfair advantage for the vast population since they have a smaller number of electors. For example, it would be unfair if one candidate can have more states but less electors and so they would lose anyway since they got the votes of the smaller states instead. Second con would be that not all parties are equally divided. The electoral college tends to lean more on the republic and democratic side rather than the third parties that are stated in the elections. Therefore, instead of having the electoral college the way it is, it should be eradicated, and the voting system should be changed so the majority would vote and have the same number as other states. This would create a winner takes all for every state instead of specific ones. One reason why it would be more of a representative presidential election is that the other people also known as the third parties would be able to have a higher chance for getting elected than taking part of the electoral college. This wo uld allow more third parties to be involved with more media ads and have more chances being seen in the public eye. Another reason why it would be more of a representative presidential election is that since the candidates would want to get everyoners votes, their choices they make would involve everyone instead of singling out other states. Meaning, that if a candidate really wanted to get voted, then they would offer more ideas to capture everyoners eye. There would be a lot of pros and cons for having the electoral college eradicated and letting the majority vote instead. First pro would be that people all over the United States would finally feel that their vote would matter. This would finally let future generations feel that their vote would count. Next pro would be that it since it would make the people feel that their voice is heard rather than forgotten this would increase the chances for people to pay attention more and voting more frequently. People would more likely want to vote rather than just watch and see who gets elected. Another pro would be that minority parties or third parties would have more of a chance for getting voted rather than in electoral college where it is almost impossible to get elected. This would allow people with other races/ or ethnicities to want to get involved if they want to be a candidate instead of feeling that they have no chance against the popular groups. There are quite a few cons if the electoral college was abolished and majority voted instead. First con, is that since there are more parties being involved some voters would no know who to vote so there would be many choices to choose from. This might make people feel that they might be overwhelmed when voting. Another con is that if each state were counted as the same number, the elections might be longer than it is rather than in the electoral college where a number can be as high as 55 which is known the number of electors in California (Electoral Vote vs Popular Vote). This would mean that candidates would be able to outsmart the system and be able to cheat their way into presidency. If the electoral college would be abolished and have the majority vote instead it would help the system out in many ways. Another reason that it would help the system is because if people voted for their candidate for economic reasons, for example to lower taxes, then they have a better chance for having a better economy if more people saw this as an opportunity to get their state back in to shape then that candidate has captured their eye in the elections. This could also capture the eyes of a state that immensely needs financial help as well. Finally, The United States have been through a lot of elections that include many presidents that were not best suited for the job and others that were very well qualified and even saved the United States from many disasters. Even though there were some presidents and some that were not, that does not mean that the United States will always be there same. There are a lot of elections that some people do not win because the electoral college says they did not have enough points. But, if the electoral college was abolished many people would feel that the government would let destiny take its path and let whoever the American citizens vote lead them to a better society. As stated before that if majority was to vote instead of the electoral college then this would also lead to a better economic system financially, socially, and mentally. This is what people need today. Instead of people getting into debates about who voted for who, they would understand that the majority would have to ha ve to vote instead of the main states instead leaving the United States a little more satisfied with their votes.
